The whole first-year journey in one place: milk to solids to family meals, plus exactly how much water is okay at each age.
The quick version
The move from an all-milk newborn to a toddler eating off your plate happens in one continuous year — but it rarely feels continuous when you’re in it. One month it’s all bottles, the next you’re wondering about purees, water, and when cow’s milk enters the picture. Here is the whole arc in one place, so you can see where you are and what’s coming, without a single spreadsheet.
For roughly the first half-year, breast milk or formula covers everything your baby needs — including hydration. That’s the key reason plain water isn’t recommended yet: a young baby’s tummy is small, and water can crowd out the milk they actually need (and, in excess, throw off their sodium balance). So no water bottles, no watered-down anything — just milk on demand.
When your baby can sit with support, holds their head steady, and reaches for your food with real interest, they’re likely ready to start solids. Early solids are about practice — tasting, mouthing, learning to move food around — not nutrition targets. Milk stays the main event. This is also when small sips of water from an open or straw cup can be offered with meals, mostly for the skill and to help with any constipation from new foods.
| Age | Water | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 months | None | Milk provides all hydration. Skip plain water. |
| 6–12 months | Small sips with meals | A few ounces total per day from a cup — practice, not a main drink. |
| 12–24 months | Freely, plus whole cow’s milk | Water any time; cow’s milk can replace formula. |
| Over 2 years | Water is the main drink | Water and milk; skip or strictly limit juice. |
Textures get chunkier, finger foods take over, and mealtimes start to look like actual meals. Your baby will get better at self-feeding and messier in the process — both are progress. Milk feeds usually start to space out as food fills more of the gap, but milk is still the nutritional backbone right up to the first birthday.
The one-year swap
Around 12 months, food and milk trade places: solids become the main source of nutrition, and milk (now whole cow’s milk is an option) becomes the supporting drink. Water can flow freely from here.
Check with your pediatrician if
Under 6 months, extra water isn’t recommended — breast milk or formula gives all the hydration a young baby needs, and you can offer it more often in heat. Check with your pediatrician before offering water early.
Whole cow’s milk as a main drink is generally introduced at 12 months. Before that, breast milk or formula is the standard. Cow’s milk in cooking or yogurt earlier is usually fine — ask your provider.
Not yet. For most of the first year, solids are practice alongside milk, which remains the main source of nutrition. Milk feeds naturally taper as your baby eats more real food toward 12 months.
